Our Basic Need and our WHY

I think its safe to say that we all know that this business is behavioral. It is our behavior in business that determines our activity, our belief, and our confidence. Consequently, it is our behavior in business that determines our results. This truth, though it can be harsh, is the very basis on which we build.

Taken deeper, we can also safely say that the #1 thing that affects our behavior in business is our WHY. What is the purpose of building your Mary Kay business? When you started your business, what was that desire in your heart? As you have seen and learned the Mary Kay culture, what new desire has emerged? As your life has grown and changed, what new purpose has arisen or what old purpose has deepened? What is that one thing you just cannot live without? That one non-negotiable thing? When all the lights are off, when the music stops, when the people are all gone, when facebook, twitter, and Instagram and turned off, what do you dream about? You know, that thing that keeps you up at night, last thing on your mind before bed, that thing that wakes you up in the morning? Your WHY; what is it?

My WHY exists in choices and options for my family.

Dr Glasser describes 5 basis needs we all have as humans:
1. Power and Achievement
2. Love and Belonging
3. Freedom and Flexibility
4. Joy and Fun
5. Security and Safety

My most dominant need is Power and Achievement. I live for this and the results it brings. I am bottom-line and goal oriented. I see the target and I will think my way and work my way into it. This falls right into my WHY because the choices and options I desire for my family require a lot of cash. With my Power & Achievement need, I can set goals and work to meet them. Mary Kay creates that activity vehicle because the business is a goal-driven business. It creates the results vehicle because I define my income which provides the choices and options for my family. Here are some tangible choices and options, in no particular order, that are important to my family:
Investment properties
Investment accounts
Educational charities
Church giving
Kids College Funds
Kids Trust Funds
Our retirements
Overseas vacation properties
Twice a year family vacation from our vacation savings account
Restaurant
Our dream home
Savings accounts

From this connection, I get all the other needs covered - Love and Belonging, Freedom and Flexibility, Joy and Fun, and Security and Safety
